In June 2014, I skippered an all-female crew of four on a 2,400 mile row across the Pacific Ocean, from California to Hawaii.
From beginning to end we faced a variety of unforeseen challenges. Before the race began, we dealt with last minute crew dropouts and missed the start as our boat was stuck on a cargo ship. In the first few weeks we battled strong winds, aggressive waves and equipment breakages.
As we headed further south, we were rewarded with spectacular sunrises, star-studded skies and a chance encounter with a turtle. With 300 miles left to go, we were forced to outrun two hurricanes that were closing in on us and threatening our chances of finishing the challenge.
After 50 days at sea, we rowed past Waikiki beach, ending our adventure and setting a Guinness World Record in the process.
